Den 12 januari meddelade sökmotorn Google att den överväger sin verksamhet i Kina. Orsakerna till utsagan härleddes till anklagelser beträffande yttrandefrihet och så kallade cyberattacker som spårats till Kina. Google överväger nu att lämna världens största marknad i kontexten av internetanvändare. Är Google verkligen redo att stryka Kina från sin kundlista?
David Drummond, chef för Googles juridiska ärenden, var den första personen som uttalade sig om bolagets beslut på dess officiella blogg. En av orsakerna var enligt Drummond rutinartade inbrytningar till människorättsaktivisters Gmail-konton med kinesiskt ursprung. Google gjorde samtidigt beslutet att upphäva all filtrering på sökmotorn även om detta i praktiken betyder att slopa företagsverksamheten.
De kinesiska myndigheterna har svarat på konflikten med att uttrycka sig om att bolaget inte kan förvänta sig kringgå kinesisk lagstiftning. Ma Zhaoxu, representant för Kinas utrikesdepartement, poängterade att Kina också utsatts för cyberattacker, skriver CRI. Xinhua citerade en annan representant från ministeriet som i sin tur uttalade sig om att Kina är ”öppet”.
Dispyten mellan Kina och Google kan resultera i vidare tvister i förhållandet mellan Kina och USA. The Washington Post poängterade att dilemmat framstiger samtidigt som USA strävar till att närma sitt förhållande med Kina. Cyberattackerna har givit upphov till att USA överlåtit en officiell protest till Beijing, rapporterar the Sydney Morning. Hur dramatiska kan konsekvenserna bli om Google verkligen lämnar Kina?
