Den 28 mars 1959 upplöste den lokala regeringen i Tibet i och med att den kinesiska premiärministern Zhou Enlai skrev under ett kungörande. Datumet markerar slutet på det åtta år långa händelseförlopp i Tibet vars efterdyningar påverkar regionen än i denna dag.

Datumet hyllas i de kinesiska historieböckerna som den dag då de livegna bönderna befriades och demokratiska reformer introducerades i Tibet. Datumets betydelse debatteras flitigt i andra delar av världen.
